On September 11, 2001, four U.S. planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center, The Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania killing more than 3,000 people in a matter of hours. Behind the staggering number of deaths are the individuals, each of whom left behind family, friends and coworkers who feel the national tragedy on a personal level.

On this sad and tragic day, one of our own was taken from us. Port Authority Police Officer Rich Rodriguez made the ultimate sacrifice, by saving others while putting himself at risk. He was a snare drummer with the band and his absence is felt throughout the ranks, as well as the police bag piping community around New Jersey. He truly was our "rhythm section" and on Friday November 16 in Perth Amboy NJ, his memorial service was attended by over 100 pipers and drummers. It was a beautiful mass and we all felt as if Rich was right there with us the entire day. Mike and Ana Rodriguez, Richie's father and mother who live in Puerto Rico were unable to make the trip to New Jersey on November 16. Richie's wife Cindy made plans to have another memorial in Puerto Rico. On Wednesday November 28, members of different pipe bands that make up the New Jersey United Pipe Band (NJUPB) went to Ponce, Puerto Rico for a memorial in his honor. Seventeen pipers and drummers made the trip to honor Rich and his family. The band has honored Richie by adopting a new band patch and a new design on the bass drum, which includes his badge number inside a police service ribbon.
